23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

Luke 18:23 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 18:23

And when he heard this
That one thing was wanting, and what that was, which was to part with all his worldly substance, and follow Christ;

he was very sorrowful, for he was very rich;
(See Gill on Matthew 19:22).

Luke 18:23 In-Context

21 And he said, All these things I have kept from my youth up.
22 Now when Jesus heard this, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.
23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful, for he was very rich.
24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How difficult it is for those that have riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
25 For it is easier to put a cable through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
