After the time of Abimelech1 a man of Issachar,2 Tola son of Puah,3 the son of Dodo, rose to save4 Israel. He lived in Shamir,5 in the hill country of Ephraim.
He leda Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.
He was followed by Jair6 of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years.
He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys.7 They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.b85
When Jair9 died, he was buried in Kamon.
Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD.10 They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths,11 and the gods of Aram,12 the gods of Sidon,13 the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites1415 and the gods of the Philistines.16 And because the Israelites forsook the LORD17 and no longer served him,
he became angry18 with them. He sold them19 into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,
who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead,20 the land of the Amorites.
The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah,21 Benjamin and the house of Ephraim;22 and Israel was in great distress.
Then the Israelites cried23 out to the LORD, "We have sinned24 against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."2511
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians,26 the Amorites,27 the Ammonites,28 the Philistines,29
