The Spirit of the LORD came upon him,1 so that he became Israel's judgea and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim2 king of Aram3 into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.
So the land had peace4 for forty years,5 until Othniel son of Kenaz6 died.
Once again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD,7 and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab8 power over Israel.
Getting the Ammonites9 and Amalekites10 to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.b1114
The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab12 for eighteen years.
Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer13--Ehud14, a left-handed15 man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute16 to Eglon king of Moab.
Now Ehud17 had made a double-edged sword about a foot and a halfc long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing.
He presented the tribute18 to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.1918
After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way the men who had carried it.
At the idolsd near Gilgal he himself turned back and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." The king said, "Quiet!" And all his attendants left him.
