"This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears.1 No one is near to comfort2 me, no one to restore my spirit. My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed."317
Zion stretches out her hands,4 but there is no one to comfort her. The LORD has decreed for Jacob that his neighbors become his foes;5 Jerusalem has become an unclean6 thing7 among them.
"The LORD is righteous,8 yet I rebelled9 against his command. Listen, all you peoples; look upon my suffering.10 My young men and maidens have gone into exile.1119
"I called to my allies12 but they betrayed me. My priests and my elders perished13 in the city while they searched for food to keep themselves alive.
"See, O LORD, how distressed14 I am! I am in torment15 within, and in my heart I am disturbed,16 for I have been most rebellious.17 Outside, the sword bereaves; inside, there is only death.1821
"People have heard my groaning,19 but there is no one to comfort me.20 All my enemies have heard of my distress; they rejoice21 at what you have done. May you bring the day22 you have announced so they may become like me.
"Let all their wickedness come before you; deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my sins.23 My groans24 are many and my heart is faint."
