Lamentations 2:11-21 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
11 My eyes fail from weeping,1 I am in torment within,2 my heart3 is poured out4 on the ground because my people are destroyed,5 because children and infants faint6 in the streets of the city. 12 They say to their mothers, "Where is bread and wine?"7 as they faint like wounded men in the streets of the city, as their lives ebb away8 in their mothers' arms.9 13 What can I say for you?10 With what can I compare you, O Daughter11 of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion?12 Your wound is as deep as the sea.13 Who can heal you? 14 The visions of your prophets were false14 and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity.15 The oracles they gave you were false and misleading.16 15 All who pass your way clap their hands at you;17 they scoff18 and shake their heads19 at the Daughter of Jerusalem:20 "Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty,21 the joy of the whole earth?"22 16 All your enemies open their mouths wide against you;23 they scoff and gnash their teeth24 and say, "We have swallowed her up.25 This is the day we have waited for; we have lived to see it."26 17 The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled27 his word, which he decreed long ago.28 He has overthrown you without pity,29 he has let the enemy gloat over you,30 he has exalted the horna of your foes.31 18 The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.32 O wall of the Daughter of Zion,33 let your tears34 flow like a river day and night;35 give yourself no relief, your eyes no rest.36 19 Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart37 like water in the presence of the Lord.38 Lift up your hands39 to him for the lives of your children, who faint40 from hunger at the head of every street. 20 "Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring,41 the children they have cared for?42 Should priest and prophet be killed43 in the sanctuary of the Lord?44 21 "Young and old lie together in the dust of the streets; my young men and maidens have fallen by the sword.45 You have slain them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered them without pity.46
