What can I say for you?4 With what can I compare you, O Daughter5 of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion?6 Your wound is as deep as the sea.7 Who can heal you?
All who pass your way clap their hands at you;11 they scoff12 and shake their heads13 at the Daughter of Jerusalem:14 "Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty,15 the joy of the whole earth?"16
The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled21 his word, which he decreed long ago.22 He has overthrown you without pity,23 he has let the enemy gloat over you,24 he has exalted the horna of your foes.25
Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart31 like water in the presence of the Lord.32 Lift up your hands33 to him for the lives of your children, who faint34 from hunger at the head of every street.
"Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring,35 the children they have cared for?36 Should priest and prophet be killed37 in the sanctuary of the Lord?38
"As you summon to a feast day, so you summoned against me terrors41 on every side. In the day of the LORD's anger no one escaped42 or survived; those I cared for and reared,43 my enemy has destroyed."
