The Lord has rejected his altar and abandoned his sanctuary.1 He has handed over to the enemy the walls of her palaces;2 they have raised a shout in the house of the LORD as on the day of an appointed feast.3
The LORD determined to tear down the wall around the Daughter of Zion.4 He stretched out a measuring line5 and did not withhold his hand from destroying. He made ramparts6 and walls lament; together they wasted away.7
Her gates8 have sunk into the ground; their bars9 he has broken and destroyed. Her king and her princes are exiled10 among the nations, the law11 is no more, and her prophets12 no longer find visions13 from the LORD.
The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence;14 they have sprinkled dust15 on their heads16 and put on sackcloth.17 The young women of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground.18
What can I say for you?28 With what can I compare you, O Daughter29 of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion?30 Your wound is as deep as the sea.31 Who can heal you?
All who pass your way clap their hands at you;35 they scoff36 and shake their heads37 at the Daughter of Jerusalem:38 "Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty,39 the joy of the whole earth?"40
The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled45 his word, which he decreed long ago.46 He has overthrown you without pity,47 he has let the enemy gloat over you,48 he has exalted the horna of your foes.49
