14 And [when they] came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them.

Mark 9:14

And when he came to his disciples
The other nine, who were left at the bottom of the mountain, and were waiting for him:

he saw a great multitude about them:
there was a multitude that followed him from Bethsaida hither; and which, very likely, was greatly increased upon Christ's arrival in those parts, and the people hearing of it;

and the Scribes questioning with them;
disputing and contending with them about their master, his doctrines and miracles, and their mission and authority from him; insulting them, on account of their inability to dispossess a dumb spirit, hereafter related.

12 And he said to them, "Elijah indeed does come first [and] restores all [things]. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man that he should suffer many [things] and be treated with contempt?
13 But I tell you that indeed Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him."
14 And [when they] came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them.
15 And immediately the whole crowd, [when they] saw him, were amazed, and ran up to [him] [and] greeted him.
16 And he asked them, "What are you arguing [about] with them?"
