8 Et si haut placée qu'ait été cette maison, quiconque passera près d'elle sera dans l'étonnement et sifflera. On dira: Pourquoi l'Eternel a-t-il ainsi traité ce pays et cette maison?

1 Kings 9:8

And at this house which is high
The house of the most High, as some render it, and in high esteem, fame, and glory, as well as it was built on an high hill, and was itself one hundred and twenty cubits high, ( 2 Chronicles 3:4 ) , the Targum is,

``and this house which was high shall be destroyed:''

everyone that passeth by it shall be astonished;
at the ruins of the temple, and of the city of Jerusalem, which had been so magnificent:

and shall hiss;
in scorn and derision of the people of Israel, rejoicing in their ruin:

and they shall say, why hath the Lord done thus unto this land, and to
this house?
or suffered it to be done, to lie thus in waste and ruins; a land in which it had been said he delighted, and looked unto from one end of the year to the other, and a house he had taken up his dwelling in; surely something more than ordinary, they suggest, must be the cause of all this.

6 Mais si vous vous détournez de moi, vous et vos fils, si vous n'observez pas mes commandements, mes lois que je vous ai prescrites, et si vous allez servir d'autres dieux et vous prosterner devant eux,

7 j'exterminerai Israël du pays que je lui ai donné, je rejetterai loin de moi la maison que j'ai consacrée à mon nom, et Israël sera un sujet de sarcasme et de raillerie parmi tous les peuples.

8 Et si haut placée qu'ait été cette maison, quiconque passera près d'elle sera dans l'étonnement et sifflera. On dira: Pourquoi l'Eternel a-t-il ainsi traité ce pays et cette maison?

9 Et l'on répondra: Parce qu'ils ont abandonné l'Eternel, leur Dieu, qui a fait sortir leurs pères du pays d'Egypte, parce qu'ils se sont attachés à d'autres dieux, se sont prosternés devant eux et les ont servis; voilà pourquoi l'Eternel a fait venir sur eux tous ces maux.

10 Au bout de vingt ans, Salomon avait bâti les deux maisons, la maison de l'Eternel et la maison du roi.
