Joshua 10:38

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir
A city, according to Kimchi, which he passed by when he went to Hebron, and did not fight against it; but, when he had taken Hebron, returned and took it; and which Bunting ^F8 says was but a mile from it, and twenty two miles from Jerusalem, towards the south; it is the same with Kirjathsepher and Kirjathsannah, ( Joshua 15:15 Joshua 15:49 ) ; the city of a book or books; and the Rabbins say ^F9, that with the Persians Debir signifies the same, and had its name from a library which was here kept, or from the archives in which the most memorable things since the flood were recorded; or from the making of paper or parchment, or whatsoever was made use of for writing, and of which volumes of books were made:

and fought against it;
it refusing to submit to him upon his summons.

36 Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, monta d'Eglon à Hébron, et ils l'attaquèrent.

37 Ils la prirent, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, elle, son roi, toutes les villes qui en dépendaient, et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient; Josué n'en laissa échapper aucun, comme il avait fait à Eglon, et il la dévoua par interdit avec tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient.

38 Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, se dirigea sur Debir, et il l'attaqua.

39 Il la prit, elle, son roi, et toutes les villes qui en dépendaient; ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, et ils dévouèrent par interdit tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, sans en laisser échapper aucun; Josué traita Debir et son roi comme il avait traité Hébron et comme il avait traité Libna et son roi.

40 Josué battit tout le pays, la montagne, le midi, la plaine et les coteaux, et il en battit tous les rois; il ne laissa échapper personne, et il dévoua par interdit tout ce qui respirait, comme l'avait ordonné l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
