Judah has broken faith. A detestable1 thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves,2 by marrying3 the daughter of a foreign god.412
As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the LORD cut him off5 from the tents of Jacoba6--even though he brings offerings7 to the LORD Almighty.
Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears.8 You weep and wail9 because he no longer pays attention10 to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.1114
You ask,12 "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness13 between you and the wife of your youth,14 because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.1515
Has not [the LORD] made them one?16 In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring.b17 So guard yourself18 in your spirit, and do not break faith19 with the wife of your youth.
"I hate divorce,20" says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himselfc with violence21 as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit,22 and do not break faith.
