And you will know that I have sent you this admonition so that my covenant with Levi1 may continue," says the LORD Almighty.
"My covenant was with him, a covenant2 of life and peace,3 and I gave them to him; this called for reverence4 and he revered me and stood in awe of my name.
True instruction5 was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked6 with me in peace7 and uprightness,8 and turned many from sin.97
"For the lips of a priest10 ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction11--because he is the messenger12 of the LORD Almighty.
But you have turned from the way13 and by your teaching have caused many to stumble;14 you have violated the covenant15 with Levi,"16 says the LORD Almighty.
"So I have caused you to be despised17 and humiliated18 before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality19 in matters of the law."20
Have we not all one Fathera ?21 Did not one God create us?22 Why do we profane the covenant23 of our fathers by breaking faith24 with one another?
Judah has broken faith. A detestable25 thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves,26 by marrying27 the daughter of a foreign god.2812
As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the LORD cut him off29 from the tents of Jacobb30--even though he brings offerings31 to the LORD Almighty.
Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears.32 You weep and wail33 because he no longer pays attention34 to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.3514
You ask,36 "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness37 between you and the wife of your youth,38 because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.39
