8Blessed are the pure in heart,1 for they will see God.29Blessed are the peacemakers,3 for they will be called sons of God.410Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,5 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.611"Blessed are you when people insult you,7 persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.812Rejoice and be glad,9 because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.10
13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.1114"You are the light of the world.12 A city on a hill cannot be hidden.15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.1316In the same way, let your light shine before men,14 that they may see your good deeds15 and praise16 your Father in heaven.
17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.1718I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.18
