Deuteronomy 6:14

14 Don't fool around with other gods, the gods of your neighbors,

Deuteronomy 6:14 Meaning and Commentary

Deuteronomy 6:14

Ye shall not go after other gods
To serve and worship them, and swear by them; and which indeed are no gods, only nominal and fictitious ones; idols which are nothing in the world, and ought to have no veneration and adoration given them; to go after them is to worship them, and this is to depart from the true God, and go a whoring after false deities:

of the gods of the people which are round about you;
the gods of the Edomites, Ammonites, Moabites, Philistines, and Egyptians; all of which had their peculiar deities.

Deuteronomy 6:14 In-Context

12 make sure you don't forget how you got there - God brought you out of slavery in Egypt.
13 Deeply respect God, your God. Serve and worship him exclusively. Back up your promises with his name only.
14 Don't fool around with other gods, the gods of your neighbors,
15 because God, your God, who is alive among you is a jealous God. Don't provoke him, igniting his hot anger that would burn you right off the face of the Earth.
16 Don't push God, your God, to the wall as you did that day at Massah, the Testing-Place.
