Jeremiah 51:62 Meaning and Commentary

Jeremiah 51:62

Then shall thou say, O Lord
Acknowledging this prophecy to be of God; believing the accomplishment of it; and praying over it, and for it, like a good man, as doubtless he was: thou hast spoken against this place;
the city of Babylon, where Seraiah is now supposed to be: to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but
that it shall be desolate for ever;
this is the substance of the whole prophecy, that the destruction of Babylon should be an utter and a perpetual one; and which is expressed in the same words that are here used, ( Jeremiah 50:3 Jeremiah 50:13 Jeremiah 50:26 Jeremiah 50:40 ) .

Jeremiah 51:62 In-Context

60 Jeremiah had written down in a little booklet all the bad things that would come down on Babylon.
61 He told Seraiah, "When you get to Babylon, read this out in public.
62 Read, 'You, O God, said that you would destroy this place so that nothing could live here, neither human nor animal - a wasteland to top all wastelands, an eternal nothing.'
63 "When you've finished reading the page, tie a stone to it, throw it into the River Euphrates, and watch it sink.
64 Then say, 'That's how Babylon will sink to the bottom and stay there after the disaster I'm going to bring upon her.'"
