2
The LORD is a jealous1 and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance2 and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and maintains his wrath against his enemies.33
The LORD is slow to anger4 and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished.5 His way is in the whirlwind6 and the storm,7 and clouds8 are the dust of his feet.
4
He rebukes9 the sea and dries it up;10 he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel11 wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
5
The mountains quake12 before him and the hills melt away.13 The earth trembles14 at his presence, the world and all who live in it.156
Who can withstand16 his indignation? Who can endure17 his fierce anger?18 His wrath is poured out like fire;19 the rocks are shattered20 before him.
7
The LORD is good,21 a refuge in times of trouble.22 He cares for23 those who trust in him,248
but with an overwhelming flood25 he will make an end of [Nineveh]; he will pursue his foes into darkness.
9
Whatever they plot26 against the LORD hea will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.
10
They will be entangled among thorns27 and drunk28 from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.b2911
From you, [O Nineveh, ] has one come forth who plots evil against the LORD and counsels wickedness.
12
This is what the LORD says: "Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be cut off30 and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, [O Judah, ] I will afflict you no more.3113
Now I will break their yoke32 from your neck and tear your shackles away."3314
The LORD has given a command concerning you, [Nineveh]: "You will have no descendants to bear your name.34 I will destroy the carved images35 and cast idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave,36 for you are vile."
15
Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news,37 who proclaims peace!38 Celebrate your festivals,39 O Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you;40 they will be completely destroyed.
