1
Now it happened1after manydays that the word of the LORDcame to Elijah in the thirdyear, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab, and 2I will sendrain on the face of the earth."
2
So Elijahwent to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.
3AhabcalledObadiah3who was over the household. (Now Obadiaha4feared the LORDgreatly ;
4
for 5when Jezebelbdestroyed the prophets of the LORD, Obadiahtook a hundredprophets and hid them by fifties in a cave, and 6provided them with bread and water.)
5
Then Ahabsaid to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys ; perhaps we will findgrass and keep the horses and mulesalive, and not chave to killsome of the cattle."
6
So they divided the land between them to dsurvey it; Ahabwentoneway by himself and Obadiahwentanotherway by himself.
7
Now as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijahemet him, 7and he recognized him and fell on his face and said, "Is this you, Elijah my master ?"
8
He said to him, "It is I. Go, say to your master, 'Behold, Elijah is here."'
9
He said, "Whatfsin have I committed, that you are giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to put me to death ?
10
"8As the LORD your Godlives, there is nonation or kingdomwhere my master has not sent to search for you; and when they said, 'He is not here,' he made the kingdom or nationswear that they could not find you.
11
"And now you are saying, 'Go, say to your master, "Behold, Elijah is here."'
12
"It will come about when I leave you 9that the Spirit of the LORD will carry you where I do not know ; so when I come and tellAhab and he cannotfind you, he will kill me, although I your servant have gfeared the LORD from my youth.
13
"10Has it not been told to my masterwhat I did when Jezebelkilled the prophets of the LORD, that I hidha hundredprophets of the LORD by fifties in a cave, and provided them with bread and water ?
14
"And now you are saying, 'Go, say to your master, "Behold, Elijah is here"'; he will then kill me."
15Elijahsaid, "11As the LORD of hostslives, beforewhom I stand, I will surelyshow myself to him today."
16
So Obadiahwent to meetAhab and told him; and Ahabwent to meetElijah.
17
When AhabsawElijah, 12Ahabsaid to him, "Is this you, you troubler of Israel ?"
18
He said, "I have not troubledIsrael, but you and your father'shouse have, because 13you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and 14you have followed the Baals.
19"Now then send and gather to me allIsrael at 15MountCarmel, 16together with 450prophets of Baal and 400prophets of 17the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel'stable."
20
So Ahabsent a message among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophetstogether at MountCarmel.
21Elijahcamenear to all the people and said, "18Howlong will you ihesitatebetweentwoopinions ? 19If the LORD is God, follow Him; but ifBaal, follow him." But the people did not answer him a word.
22
Then Elijahsaid to the people, "I 20alone am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal'sprophetsaremen.
23
"Now let them give us twooxen ; and let them chooseoneox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but putnofire under it; and I will prepare the otherox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it.
24
"Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD, and 21the Godwhoanswers by fire, He is God." And all the peoplesaid, "jThat is a goodidea."
25
So Elijahsaid to the prophets of Baal, "Chooseoneox for yourselves and prepare it first for you are many, and call on the name of your god, but putnofire under it."
26
Then they took the oxwhichkwas given them and they prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morninguntilnoonsaying, "O Baal, answer us." But there was 22novoice and nooneanswered. And they lleapedabout the altarwhichmthey made.
27
It came about at noon, that Elijahmocked them and said, "Call out with a loudvoice, for he is a god ; either he is occupied or goneaside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened."
28
So they cried with a loudvoice and 23cut themselves according to their custom with swords and lancesuntil the bloodgushed out on them.
29
When midday was past, they nraved24until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice ; but there was novoice, nooneanswered, and nooonepaidattention.
30
Then Elijahsaid to all the people, "Comenear to me." So all the peoplecamenear to him. And 25he repaired the altar of the LORD which had been torndown.
31Elijahtooktwelvestones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, "26Israel shall be your name."
32
So with the stones he built an altar in 27the name of the LORD, and he made a trencharound the altar, large enough to hold two pmeasures of seed.
3328Then he arranged the wood and cut the ox in pieces and laid it on the wood.
34
And he said, "Fillfourpitchers with water and pour it on the burntoffering and on the wood." And he said, "Do it a secondtime," and they did it a secondtime. And he said, "Do it a thirdtime," and they did it a thirdtime.
35
The waterflowedaround the altar and he alsofilled the trench with water.
3629At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophetcamenear and said, "30O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that 31You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and 32I have doneallthesethings at Your word.
37"Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that thispeople may know that You, O LORD, are God, and that You have turned their heartbackagain."
38
Then the 33fire of the LORDfell and consumed the burntoffering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39
When all the peoplesaw it, they fell on their faces ; and they said, "34The LORD, He is God ; the LORD, He is God."
40
Then Elijahsaid to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal ; do not let one of them escape." So they seized them; and Elijahbrought them down to 35the brookKishon, 36and slew them there.
41
Now Elijahsaid to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink ; for there is the sound of the roar of a heavy shower."
42
So Ahabwent up to eat and drink. But Elijahwent up to the top of 37Carmel ; and he 38croucheddown on the earth and put his facebetween his knees.
43
He said to his servant, "Go up now, looktoward the sea." So he went up and looked and said, "There is nothing ." And he said, "Goback " seventimes.
44
It came about at the seventh time, that he said, "Behold, 39a cloud as small as a man'shand is coming up from the sea." And he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'qPrepare your chariot and godown, so that the heavy shower does not stop you.' "
45
In a littlewhile the skygrewblack with clouds and wind, and there was a heavyshower. And Ahabrode and went to 40Jezreel.
46
Then 41the hand of the LORD was on Elijah, and 42he girded up his loins and routranAhabsto Jezreel.
