Then Davidcame to 1Nob to Ahimelech the priest ; and Ahimelech2cametrembling to meetDavid and said to him, "Why are you alone and noone with you?"
2Davidsaid to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commissioned me with a matter and has said to me, '3Let nooneknowanything about the matter on which I am sending you and with which I have commissioned you; and I have directed the youngmen to a certainplace.'
3"Now therefore, whatado you have on hand ? Givebme five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found."
The priestansweredDavid and said, "There is noordinarybreadcon hand, but there is 4consecratedbread ; ifonly the youngmen have 5kept themselves from women."
5Davidanswered the priest and said to him, "6Surelywomen have been kept from us as previously when I set out and the 7vessels of the youngmen were holy, though it was an ordinaryjourney ; howmuchmore then today will dtheir vessels be holy?"
So 8the priestgave him consecrated bread; for there was nobreadthere but the 9bread of the Presence which was removed from before the LORD, in order to puthotbread in its place when it was taken away.
Now one of the servants of Saul was there that day, detainedbefore the LORD ; and his name was 10Doeg the Edomite, the 11chief of Saul'sshepherds.
8Davidsaid to Ahimelech, "Now is there not a spearor a swordeon hand ? For I broughtneither my swordnor my weaponsfwith me, because the king'smatter was urgent."
Then the priestsaid, "12The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you gkilled13in the valley of Elah, behold, it is wrapped in a clothbehind the ephod ; if you would take it for yourself, take it. For there is nootherexcept it here." And Davidsaid, "There is nonelike it; give it to me."
Then Davidarose and fled that day from Saul, and went to 14Achishking of Gath.
But the 15servants of Achishsaid to him, "Is this not David the king of the land ? 16Did they not sing of thisone as they danced, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, And David his tenthousands '?"
12David17tookthesewordshto heart and greatlyfearedAchishking of Gath.
So he 18disguised his sanitybefore them, and actedinsanely in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his salivarundown into his beard.
Then Achishsaid to his servants, "Behold, you see the manbehaving as a madman. Why do you bring him to me?
"Do I lackmadmen, that you have broughtthisone to act the madman in my presence ? Shall thisonecome into my house ?"
