5
He said to them, "Return to me again in threedays." So the peopledeparted.
6
Then KingRehoboam1consulted with the elderswhohadserved* his fatherSolomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you counsel me to answer*thispeople?"
7
They spoke to him, saying, "If you will be kind to thispeople and please them and 2speakgoodwords to them, then they will be your servantsforever*."
8
But he 3forsook the counsel of the elderswhich they had given him, and consulted with the youngmenwhogrew up with him and served* him.
9
So he said to them, "Whatcounsel do you give that we may answer*thispeople, who have spoken to me, saying, 'Lighten the yokewhich your fatherput on us'?"
10
The youngmenwhogrew up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall say to the peoplewhospoke to you, saying, 'Your fathermade our yokeheavy, but you make it lighter for us.' Thus you shall say to them, 'My littlefinger is thickerthan my father'sloins!
11
'Whereas my fatherloaded you with a heavyyoke, I will add to your yoke; my fatherdisciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.' "
12
So Jeroboam and all the peoplecame to Rehoboam on the thirdday as the king had directed, saying, "Return to me on the thirdday."
13
The kinganswered them harshly, and KingRehoboamforsook the counsel of the elders.
14
He spoke to them according to the advice of the youngmen, saying, "My fathermade your yokeheavy, but I will add to it; my fatherdisciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions."
15
So the king did not listen to the people, 4for it was a turn of events from God5that the LORD might establish His word, which He spokethroughAhijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
This chapter is not only in sense the same, but is expressed almost in the selfsame words as First Kings chapter twelve, verses one through nineteen, so there needs not anything to be added to the notes there, which the reader is referred to.
