And it came about when the LORD was about to 1take up Elijah by a awhirlwind to heaven, that Elijahwent with 2Elisha from 3Gilgal.
2Elijahsaid to Elisha, "4Stayhereplease, for the LORD has sent me as far as 5Bethel." But Elishasaid, "6As the LORDlives and as you yourselflive, I will not leave you." So they wentdown to Bethel.
Then 7the sons of the prophetswho were at Bethelcame out to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from overbyou today?" And he said, "Yes, I know; be still."
4Elijahsaid to him, "Elisha, please8stayhere, for the LORD has sent me to 9Jericho." But he said, "10As the LORDlives, and as you yourselflive, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho.
511The sons of the prophetswho were at JerichoapproachedElisha and said to him, "12Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from overcyou today?" And he danswered, "Yes, I know; be still."
Then Elijahsaid to him, "Please13stayhere, for the LORD has sent me to 14the Jordan." And he said, "As the LORDlives, and as you yourselflive, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on.
Now 15fiftymen of the sons of the prophetswent and stoodopposite them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.
8Elijah16took his mantle and folded it together and 17struck the waters, and they were dividedhere and there, so that the two of them crossedover on dryground.
When they had crossedover, Elijahsaid to Elisha, "Askwhat I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elishasaid, "Please, let a 18doubleportion of your spirit be upon me."
He said, "You have asked a hardthing. Nevertheless, if you 19see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."
As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared 20a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijahwent up by a ewhirlwind to heaven.
12Elishasaw it and cried out, "21My father, my father, the fchariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he sawgElijah nomore. Then 22he tookhold of his own clothes and tore them in twopieces.
He also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan.
He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had 23struck the waters, they were dividedhere and there; and Elishacrossedover.
Now when 24the sons of the prophetswho were at Jerichoopposite him saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijahrests on Elisha." And they came to meet him and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
They said to him, "Beholdnow, there are with your servantsfiftystrongmen, please let them go and search for your master; perhaps25the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and cast him on somemountainor into somevalley." And he said, "You shall not send."
But when 26they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, "Send." They sent therefore fiftymen; and they searchedthreedays but did not find him.
They returned to him while he was staying at Jericho; and he said to them, "Did I not say to you, 'Do not go '?"
Then the men of the citysaid to Elisha, "Behold now, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lordsees; but the water is bad and the landhis unfruitful."
He said, "Bring me a newjar, and putsaltiin it." So they brought it to him.
He went out to the spring of water and 27threwsaltjin it and said, "Thussays the LORD, 'I have kpurifiedthesewaters; there shall not be from theredeath or lunfruitfulnessanylonger.' "
So the waters have been mpurified to thisday, according to the word of Elishawhich he spoke.
Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the way, youngladscame out from the city and 28mocked him and said to him, "Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!"
When he lookedbehind him and saw them, he 29cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bearscame out of the woods and tore up forty-twolads of ntheir number.
He went from there to 30MountCarmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
