12
And they began callingBarnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chiefspeaker.
13
The priest of Zeus, whose temple was justoutside the city, broughtoxen and garlands to the gates, and 1wanted to offersacrifice with the crowds.
14
But when 2the apostlesBarnabas and Paulheard of it, they 3tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out
15
and saying, "Men, why are you doingthesethings? We are also4men of the samenature as you, and 5preach the gospel to you that you should turn from these6vainthings to a 7livingGod, 8WHOMADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM.
16
"In the generationsgone by He 9permittedall the nations to 10go their own ways;
17
and yet11He did not leaveHimselfwithoutwitness, in that He didgood and 12gave you rains from heaven and fruitfulseasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness."
18
Even sayingthesethings, with difficulty they restrained the crowds from offeringsacrifice to them.
19
But 13Jewscame from 14Antioch and 15Iconium, and having wonover the crowds, they 16stonedPaul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.
20
But while 17the disciplesstoodaround him, he got up and entered the city. The nextday he wentaway with Barnabas to 18Derbe.
21
After they had 19preached the gospel to that city and had 20mademanydisciples, they returned to 21Lystra and to 22Iconium and to 23Antioch,
22
strengthening the souls of 24the disciples, encouraging them to continue in 25the faith, and saying, "26Throughmanytribulations we mustenter the kingdom of God."
