9A visionappeared to Paul in the night: a man of 10Macedonia was standing and appealing to him, and saying, "Comeover to Macedonia and help us."

When he had seen11the vision, immediately12we sought to go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to 13preach the gospel to them.

Soputting out to sea from 14Troas, we ran15a straightcourse to Samothrace, and on the day following to Neapolis;

and from there to 16Philippi, which is a leadingcity of the district of 17Macedonia, 18a Roman colony; and we were staying in thiscity for somedays.

And on 19the Sabbathday we wentoutside the gate to a riverside*, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and we satdown and began speaking to the women who had assembled.

14 A womannamedLydia, from the city of 20Thyatira, a seller of purplefabrics, 21a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord22opened her heart to respond to the thingsspoken by Paul.

And when she and 23her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay." And she prevailed upon us.

It happened that as we were going to 24the place of prayer, a slave-girlhaving25a spirit of divinationmet us, who was bringing her mastersmuchprofit by fortune-telling.
