But someonecame and reported to them, "The menwhom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!"

Then1the captainwentalong with 2the officers and proceeded to bring them back without*violence (for 3they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned ).

When they had brought them, they stood them before4the Council. The highpriestquestioned them,

saying, "We gave you 5strictorders not to continue teaching in thisname, and yet, you have filledJerusalem with your teaching and 6intend to bringthisman'sblood upon us."

But Peter and the apostlesanswered, "7We mustobeyGodratherthanmen.

"8The God of our fathers9raised up Jesus, whom you had 10put to death by hanging Him on a cross.

"11He is the one whom Godexalted to His righthand as a 12Prince and a 13Savior, to grant14repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

"And we are 15witnesses of thesethings; and 16so is the HolySpirit, whomGod has given to those who obey Him."

33 But when they heard this, they were 17cut to the quick and intended to kill them.

But a Phariseenamed18Gamaliel, a 19teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in 20the Council and gaveorders to put the menoutside for a shorttime.

And he said to them, "Men of Israel, takecarewhat you propose to do with thesemen.
