But Peter and the apostlesanswered, "1We mustobeyGodratherthanmen.
"2The God of our fathers3raised up Jesus, awhom you had 4put to death by hanging Him on a bcross.
"5He is the one whom Godexaltedcto His righthand as a d6Prince and a 7Savior, to grant8repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
"And we are 9witnesseseof thesethings; and 10so is the HolySpirit, whomGod has given to those who obey Him."
But when they heard this, they were 11cutfto the quick and intended to kill them.
But a Phariseenamed12Gamaliel, a 13teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in 14the Council and gaveorders to put the menoutside for a shorttime.
And he said to them, "Men of Israel, takecarewhat you propose to do with thesemen.
"For sometimeagoTheudasrose up, 15claiming to be somebody, and a group of aboutfourhundredmenjoined up with him. gBut he was killed, and allwhohfollowed him were dispersed and came to nothing.
37"Afterthisman, Judas of Galileerose up in the days of 16the census and drewaway some peopleafter him; he tooperished, and all those whoifollowed him were scattered.
38"So in the presentcase, I say to you, stayaway from thesemen and let them alone, for ifthisplanorjaction17is of men, it will be overthrown;
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; orelse you may even be found18fightingagainstGod."
They ktook his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they 19flogged them and ordered them not to lspeak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.
41So they went on their way from the presence of the m20Council, 21rejoicing that they had been consideredworthy to suffershame22for His name.
4223And everyday, in the temple and nfrom house to house, they okeptright on teaching and p24preachingJesus as the qChrist.
