And these they broughtbefore the apostles; and after 1praying, they 2laid their hands on them.

3The word of God kept on spreading; and 4the number of the disciples continued to increasegreatly in Jerusalem, and a greatmany of the priests were becomingobedient to 5the faith.

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performinggreat6wonders and signsamong the people.

But somemen from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both7Cyrenians and 8Alexandrians, and some from 9Cilicia and 10Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen.

But they were unable* to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

Then they secretlyinducedmen to say, "We have heard him speakblasphemouswordsagainstMoses and against God."

And they stirred up the people, the elders and the scribes, and they 11came up to him and dragged him away and brought him before12the Council.

They putforward13falsewitnesses who said, "Thismanincessantly*speaksagainstthis14holyplace and the Law;

for we have heard him say that 15thisNazarene, Jesus, will destroythisplace and alter16the customswhichMoseshandeddown to us."

And fixing their gaze on him, all who were sitting in the 17Councilsaw his facelike the face of an angel.
