Exodus 7:2-12

2 "You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother 1Aaron shall speak to Pharaoh that he let the sons of Israel go out of his land.
3 "But 2I will harden Pharaoh's heart that I may 3multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.
4 "When 4Pharaoh does not listen to you, then I will lay My hand on Egypt and 5bring out My hosts, My people the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt by 6great judgments.
5 "7The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I 8stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the sons of Israel from their midst."
6 So Moses and Aaron did it; 9as the LORD commanded them, thus they did.
7 Moses was 10eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Aaron's Rod Becomes a Serpent

8 Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
9 "When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, '11Work a miracle,' then you shall say to Aaron, '12Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.' "
10 So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and thus they did just as the LORD had commanded; and Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his servants, and it 13became a serpent.
11 Then Pharaoh also 14called for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they also, the 15magicians of Egypt, did the same with 16their secret arts.
12 For each one threw down his staff and they turned into serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.

Exodus 7:2-12 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO EXODUS 7

Moses and Aaron are ordered to go to Pharaoh, and require the dismission of the people of Israel, but they are told before hand that Pharaoh's heart would be hardened, and would refuse to let them go, until the hand of the Lord was stretched out, and great judgments were brought down upon, Egypt, and then they should come forth, Ex 7:1-5, which orders Moses and Aaron obeyed, and their age is observed, when this was done, Ex 7:6,7 and they are bid to work a miracle, when Pharaoh should demand one, by turning a rod into a serpent, which they did; but Pharaoh's magicians doing the same in appearance, his heart was hardened, Ex 7:8-14 and then they are directed to meet him at the river, and require the same as before; and if he refused, to smite the waters of the river with the rod, and turn them into blood, which they did, Ex 7:15-21, but Pharaoh's magicians doing the same by enchantments, he did not regard it, though the plague lasted seven days, Ex 7:22-25.
