For as many as are of the works of athe Law are under a curse ; for it is written, "1CURSED IS EVERYONEWHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALLTHINGSWRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM11Now that 2noone is justifiedbby cthe LawbeforeGod is evident ; for, "d3THE RIGHTEOUSMAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."
12eHowever, the Law is not fof faith ; on the contrary, "4HE WHO PRACTICES THEM SHALL LIVEgBY THEM."
13Christ5redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-for it is written, "6CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON 7A hTREE "-
in order that 8in ChristJesus the blessing of Abraham might icome to the Gentiles, so that we 9would receive10the promise of the Spiritthroughfaith.
1511Brethren, 12I speakjin terms of humanrelations : 13eventhough it is only a man'skcovenant, yet when it has been ratified, noonesets it asideoraddslconditions to it.
16Now the promises were spoken14to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "15And to your seed," that is, Christ.
What I am saying is this : the Law, which came16fourhundred and thirtyyearslater, does not invalidate a covenantpreviouslyratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.
For 17if the inheritance is mbased on law, it is nolongernbased on a promise ; but 18God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.
1919Why the Lawthen ? It was addedobecause of transgressions, having been 20ordainedthroughangels21by the pagency of a mediator, until22the seed would come to whom the promise had been made.
20Now23a mediator is not qfor one party only; whereasGod is only one.
Is the Lawthencontrary to the promises of God ? 24May it never be! For 25if a law had been given which was able to impartlife, then righteousnessrwould indeed have beensbased on law.
But the Scripture has 26shut up teveryoneundersin, so that the promise by faith in JesusChrist might be given to those who believe.
But beforefaithcame, we were kept in custodyunder the law, 27being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.
24Therefore the Law has become our 28tutor to lead us to Christ, so that 29we may be justified by faith.
