Jeremiah 51:46-56

46 "Now ¹so that your heart does not grow faint, And you are not afraid at the ²report that will be heard in the land - For the report will come one year, And after that another report in another year, And violence will be in the land With ³ruler against ruler -

47 Therefore behold, days are coming When I will punish the ⁴idols of Babylon; And her whole land will be ⁵put to shame And all her slain will fall in her midst.

48 "Then ⁶heaven and earth and all that is in them Will shout for joy over Babylon, For ⁷the destroyers will come to her from the north," Declares the LORD.

49 ⁸Indeed Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel, As also for Babylon ⁹the slain of all the earth have fallen.

50 You ¹⁰who have escaped the sword, Depart! Do not stay! ¹¹Remember the LORD from afar, And let Jerusalem come to your mind.

51 ¹²We are ashamed because we have heard reproach; Disgrace has covered our faces, For ¹³aliens have entered The holy places of the LORD'S house.

52 "Therefore behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will punish her ¹⁴idols, And the mortally wounded will groan throughout her land.

53 "Though Babylon should ¹⁵ascend to the heavens, And though she should fortify her lofty stronghold, From ¹⁶Me destroyers will come to her," declares the LORD.

54 The ¹⁷sound of an outcry from Babylon, And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!

55 For the LORD is going to destroy Babylon, And He will make her loud noise vanish from her. And their ¹⁸waves will roar like many waters; The tumult of their voices sounds forth.

56 For the ¹⁹destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon, And her mighty men will be captured, Their ²⁰bows are shattered; For the LORD is a God of ²¹recompense, He will fully repay.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 51

The former part of this chapter is a continuation of the prophecy of the preceding chapter, concerning the destruction of Babylon, Jer 51:1-58; the latter part of it contains a prophecy of Jeremiah sent to the captives in Babylon by the hand of Seraiah, with the copy of the above prophecy against Babylon, and an order to fasten a stone to it, and cast it into the river Euphrates, as a sign, confirming the utter and irreparable ruin of Babylon, Jer 51:59-64.
