Jeremiah 51:46-56

46 "Now 1so that your heart does not grow faint, And you are not afraid at the 2report that will be heard in the land - For the report will come one year, And after that another report in another year, And violence will be in the land With 3ruler against ruler -
47 Therefore behold, days are coming When I will punish the 4idols of Babylon; And her whole land will be 5put to shame And all her slain will fall in her midst.
48 "Then 6heaven and earth and all that is in them Will shout for joy over Babylon, For 7the destroyers will come to her from the north," Declares the LORD.
49 8Indeed Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel, As also for Babylon 9the slain of all the earth have fallen.
50 You 10who have escaped the sword, Depart! Do not stay! 11Remember the LORD from afar, And let Jerusalem come to your mind.
51 12We are ashamed because we have heard reproach; Disgrace has covered our faces, For 13aliens have entered The holy places of the LORD'S house.
52 "Therefore behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will punish her 14idols, And the mortally wounded will groan throughout her land.
53 "Though Babylon should 15ascend to the heavens, And though she should fortify her lofty stronghold, From 16Me destroyers will come to her," declares the LORD.
54 The 17sound of an outcry from Babylon, And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
55 For the LORD is going to destroy Babylon, And He will make her loud noise vanish from her. And their 18waves will roar like many waters; The tumult of their voices sounds forth.
56 For the 19destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon, And her mighty men will be captured, Their 20bows are shattered; For the LORD is a God of 21recompense, He will fully repay.

Jeremiah 51:46-56 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 51

The former part of this chapter is a continuation of the prophecy of the preceding chapter, concerning the destruction of Babylon, Jer 51:1-58; the latter part of it contains a prophecy of Jeremiah sent to the captives in Babylon by the hand of Seraiah, with the copy of the above prophecy against Babylon, and an order to fasten a stone to it, and cast it into the river Euphrates, as a sign, confirming the utter and irreparable ruin of Babylon, Jer 51:59-64.
