Duringsupper, 4the devil having alreadyput into the heart of 5JudasIscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,

Jesus, 6knowing that the Father had givenallthings into His hands, and that 7He had comeforth from God and was goingback to God,

got up from supper, and laidaside His garments; and taking a towel, He 8girdedHimself.
Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet
5Then He pouredwater into the basin, and began to 9wash the disciples'feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

So He came to SimonPeter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"

Jesusanswered and said to him, "What I do you do not realizenow, but you will understand10hereafter*."

Petersaid to Him, "Never* shall You wash my feet!" Jesusanswered him, "11If I do not wash you, 12you havenopart with Me."

SimonPetersaid to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."

Jesussaid to him, "He who has bathedneedsonly** to wash his feet, but is completelyclean; and 13you are clean, but not all of you."

For 14He knew the one who was betraying Him; for thisreason He said, "Not all of you are clean."

Sowhen He had washed their feet, and 15taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you knowwhat I have done to you?

"You call Me 16Teacher and 17Lord; and you are right, for so I am.

"If I then, 18the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you alsoought to washoneanother'sfeet.

"For I gave you 19an example that you also should do as I did to you.

"Truly, truly, I say to you, 20a slave is not greater than his master, nor is 21one who is sentgreater than the one who sent him.

"If you knowthesethings, you are 22blessedif you do them.
