Then the men of Ephraim were summoned, and they crossedato Zaphon and 1said to Jephthah, "Why did you crossover to fight against the sons of Ammonwithoutcalling us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you."
2Jephthahsaid to them, "I and my people were at greatstrife with the sons of Ammon; when I called you, you did not deliver me from their hand.
"When I saw that you would not deliver me, I b2took my life in my hands and crossedoveragainst the sons of Ammon, and the LORDgave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me thisday to fight against me?"
Then Jephthahgatheredall the men of Gilead and foughtEphraim; and the men of GileadcdefeatedEphraim, because they said, "You are fugitives of Ephraim, O Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manasseh."
The Gileadites3captured the fords of the Jordan opposite Ephraim. And it happenedwhen any of the fugitives of Ephraimsaid, "Let me crossover," the men of Gilead would say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No,"
then they would say to him, "Saynow, 'Shibboleth.' " But he said, "Sibboleth," for he could not dpronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. Thus there fell at that time42,000 of Ephraim.
7JephthahjudgedIsraelsixyears. Then Jephthah the Gileaditedied and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
Now Ibzan of BethlehemjudgedIsraelafter him.
He hadthirtysons, and thirtydaughters whom he egave in marriage outside the family, and he brought in thirtydaughters from outside for his sons. And he judgedIsraelsevenyears.
Then Ibzandied and was buried in Bethlehem.
Now Elon the ZebulunitejudgedIsraelafter him; and he judgedIsraeltenyears.
Then Elon the Zebulunitedied and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
Now Abdon the son of Hillel the PirathonitejudgedIsraelafter him.
He hadfortysons and thirty grandsons who rode on seventydonkeys; and he judgedIsraeleightyears.
Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonitedied and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hillcountry of the Amalekites.
