and said to them, "You broughtthisman to me as one who 1incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I 2have foundnoguilt in thisman regarding the chargeswhich you makeagainst Him

"No, nor has 3Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothingdeservingdeath has beendone by Him.

"Therefore I will 4punish Him and release Him."

[Now he was obliged* to release to them at the feastone prisoner.]

But they cried out alltogether, saying, "5Away with thisman, and release for us Barabbas!"

(He was onewho had been thrown into prison for an insurrectionmade in the city, and for murder.

Pilate, wanting to releaseJesus, addressed them again,

but they kept on calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify Him!

And he said to them the thirdtime, "Why, whatevil has thismandone? I have found in Him noguilt demanding death; therefore I will 6punish Him and release Him."

But they were insistent, with loudvoicesasking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.

And Pilatepronouncedsentence that their demand be granted.
