And He came to 1Nazareth, where He had beenbrought up; and as was His custom, 2He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and 3stood up to read.

And the book of the prophetIsaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the placewhere it was written,

"4THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME,BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIMRELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES,AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND,TO SETFREE* THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,

And He 6closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and 7satdown; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

And He began to say to them, "TodaythisScripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

And all were speakingwell of Him, and wondering at the graciouswords which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, "8Is this not Joseph'sson?"

And He said to them, "Nodoubt you will quotethisproverb to Me, 'Physician, healyourself! Whatever we heard was done9at Capernaum, dohere in 10your hometown as well.' "

And He said, "Truly I say to you, 11noprophet is welcome in his hometown.

"But I say to you in truth, there were manywidows in Israel12in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for threeyears and sixmonths, when a greatfaminecameoverall the land;
26
and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but 13only* to Zarephath, in the land of 14Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
