11At that atime2Herod the tetrarchheard the news about Jesus,

and said to his servants, "3This is John the Baptist ; bhe has risen from the dead, and that is whymiraculouspowers are at work in him."

For when 4Herod had Johnarrested, he bound him and put him 5in prisonbecause of 6Herodias, the wife of his brotherPhilip.

For John had been saying to him, "7It is not lawful for you to have her."

Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regardedcJohn as 8a prophet.

But when Herod'sbirthdaycame, the daughter of 9Herodiasdanceddbefore them and pleased10Herod,
7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

Having been prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."

Although he was grieved, the kingcommanded it to be givenbecause of his oaths, and because of ehis dinnerguests.

He sent and had Johnbeheaded in the prison.

And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12
His disciplescame and tookaway the body and buriedfit; and they went and reported to Jesus.
