And behold, 1one of thosewho were with Jesusreached and drew out his 2sword, and struck the 3slave of the highpriest and cutoff his ear.

ThenJesussaid to him, "Put your swordback into its place; for 4allthose who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.

"Or do you think that I cannot*appeal to My Father, and He will at onceput at My disposalmore than twelve5legions of 6angels?

"Howthen will 7the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it musthappenthisway?"

At that timeJesussaid to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? 8Everyday I used to sit in the templeteaching and you did not seize Me.

"But allthis has takenplace to fulfill9the Scriptures of the prophets."Thenall the disciplesleft Him and fled.

5710Those who had seizedJesusled Him away to 11Caiaphas, the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were gatheredtogether.

But 12Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 13courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the 14officers to see the outcome.

Now the chiefpriests and the whole15Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.

They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 16twocameforward,

and said, "Thismanstated, '17I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "
