576Those who had seizedJesusled Him away to 7Caiaphas, the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were gatheredtogether.

But 8Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 9courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the 10officers to see the outcome.

Now the chiefpriests and the whole11Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.

They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 12twocameforward,

and said, "Thismanstated, '13I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "

The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"

But 14Jesuskeptsilent. 15And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I 16adjure You by 17the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, 18the Son of God."
