Psalms 62:5-12

5 My soul, 1wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.
6 He only is 2my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God my 3salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my 4refuge is in God.
8 5Trust in Him at all times, O people; 6Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.
9 Men * of 7low * degree * are only 8vanity and men * of rank are a 9lie; In the 10balances they go up; They are together lighter than breath.
10 11Do not trust in oppression And do not vainly hope in 12robbery; If riches increase, 13do not set your heart upon them.
11 Once God has 14spoken; Twice I have heard this: That 15power belongs to God;
12 And lovingkindness 16is Yours, O Lord, For You 17recompense a man according to his work.

Psalms 62:5-12 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, [A Psalm] of David. Concerning "Jeduthun," See Gill on "Ps 39:1," title. Kimchi thinks this psalm was written concerning the captivity; and Jarchi twtdh le, concerning the decrees and judgments made against Israel by their enemies; and so some of their ancient expositions {d}; but it seems to have been composed by David when in distress, either through Saul and his courtiers, or by reason of the conspiracy of Absalom. Theodoret takes it to be a prophecy of the persecution of Antiochus in the times of the Maccabees.

{d} Vid. Yalkut Simeoni in loc.
