Exodus 2:20 Meaning and Commentary

Exodus 2:20

And he said unto his daughters, and where is he?
&c.] By the account Reuel's daughters gave of Moses, of his courage and humanity, he was very desirous of seeing him:

why [is it] that ye have left the man?
behind them at the well, and had not brought him along with them; he seemed to be displeased, and chides them, and tacitly suggests that they were rude and ungrateful not to ask a stranger, and one that had been so kind to them, to come with them and refresh himself:

call him, that he may eat bread;
take meat with them, bread being put for all provisions.

Exodus 2:20 In-Context

18 When they went back to their father Reuel, he asked them, "Why have you come home early today?"
19 The girls answered, "The shepherds chased us away, but an Egyptian defended us. He got water for us and watered our flock."
20 He asked his daughters, "Where is this man? Why did you leave him? Invite him to eat with us."
21 Moses agreed to stay with Jethro, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses to be his wife.
22 Zipporah gave birth to a son. Moses named him Gershom, because Moses was a stranger in a land that was not his own.
