16 "They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to it.

John 17:16 Meaning and Commentary

John 17:16

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
] These words are repeated from ( John 17:14 ) , where they are given as a reason of the world's hatred to them; and here, as showing that they are exposed to the evil of it; and in both are used as an argument with his Father, that he would take notice of them, and preserve them.

John 17:16 In-Context

14 I have given them your word. The world has hated them. This is because they are not part of the world any more than I am.
15 I do not pray that you will take them out of the world. I pray that you will keep them safe from the evil one.
16 "They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to it.
17 Use the truth to make them holy. Your word is truth.
18 You sent me into the world. In the same way, I have sent them into the world.
