3 Then tell the Israelites, ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, and take a calf and a lamb, both a year old and without defects, for a burnt offering.

Leviticus 9:3 Meaning and Commentary

Leviticus 9:3

And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak
That is, Aaron should speak to them, for being now high priest, Moses had no more to do with the sacrifices of the people, but it was incumbent on Aaron to call upon them to bring them to him such as the Lord by this law required of them:

saying, take ye a kid of the goats for a sin [offering];
this creature fitly represented Christ as made sin, and an offering for sin, in the room of his people:

and a calf, and a lamb;
both of them, as before observed, were proper emblems of Christ in his strength and innocence, sometimes called the fatted calf, and frequently the Lamb of God, ( Luke 15:23 ) ( John 1:29 John 1:36 ) :

[both] of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering;
denoting the tenderness of Christ, his spotless purity, and painful sufferings.

Leviticus 9:3 In-Context

1 After the ordination ceremony, on the eighth day, Moses called together Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel.
2 He said to Aaron, “Take a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without defects, and present them to the LORD .
3 Then tell the Israelites, ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, and take a calf and a lamb, both a year old and without defects, for a burnt offering.
4 Also take a bull and a ram for a peace offering and flour moistened with olive oil for a grain offering. Present all these offerings to the LORD because the LORD will appear to you today.’”
5 So the people presented all these things at the entrance of the Tabernacle, just as Moses had commanded. Then the whole community came forward and stood before the LORD .
