Josué 20

1 Ciudades de refugio
El Señor
le dijo a Josué:

2 «Ahora diles a los israelitas que designen ciudades de refugio, tal como le indiqué a Moisés.

3 Cualquier persona que mate a otra por accidente y sin intención podrá huir a una de esas ciudades; serán lugares para refugiarse de parientes que busquen venganza por la muerte de un familiar.

4 »Al llegar a una de esas ciudades, el que causó la muerte se presentará ante los ancianos en la puerta de la ciudad y les expondrá su caso. Ellos deberán permitirle la entrada a la ciudad y darle un lugar para vivir entre sus habitantes.

5 Si los parientes de la víctima llegan para vengar la muerte, los líderes no les entregarán al acusado. Pues el acusado mató al otro sin intención y sin enemistad previa.

6 Pero tendrá que quedarse en esa ciudad y ser juzgado por la asamblea local, la cual dará el veredicto. Y seguirá viviendo allí hasta que muera el sumo sacerdote que estaba ejerciendo su cargo cuando ocurrió el accidente. Solo entonces será libre para regresar a su hogar en la ciudad de donde huyó».

7 Entonces se designaron las siguientes ciudades de refugio: Cedes de Galilea, en la zona montañosa de Neftalí; Siquem, en la zona montañosa de Efraín; y Quiriat-arba (también llamada Hebrón), en la zona montañosa de Judá.

8 Al oriente del río Jordán, frente a Jericó, se designaron las siguientes ciudades: Beser, en la llanura desértica de la tribu de Rubén; Ramot, en Galaad, en el territorio de la tribu de Gad; y Golán, en Basán, en la tierra de la tribu de Manasés.

9 Esas ciudades quedaron apartadas para todos los israelitas y también para los extranjeros que vivían entre ellos. Cualquier persona que matara a otra por accidente podía refugiarse en una de esas ciudades; de esa manera, evitaba que le quitaran la vida por venganza antes de ser juzgada frente a la asamblea local.

Chapter 20

The law concerning the cities of refuge. (1-6) The cities appointed as refuges. (7-9)

Verses 1-6 When the Israelites were settled in their promised inheritance, they were reminded to set apart the cities of refuge, whose use and typical meaning have been explained, Nu 35; De 19. God's spiritual Israel have, and shall have in Christ and heaven, not only rest to repose in, but refuge to secure themselves in. These cities were designed to typify the relief which the gospel provides for penitent sinners, and their protection from the curse of the law and the wrath of God, in our Lord Jesus, to whom believers flee for refuge, ( Hebrews 6:18 ) .

Verses 7-9 These cities, as those also on the other side Jordan, stood so that a man might in half a day reach one of them from any part of the country. God is ever a Refuge at hand. They were all Levites' cities. It was kindness to the poor fugitive, that when he might not go up to the house of the Lord, yet he had the servants of God with him, to instruct him, and pray for him, and to help to make up the want of public ordinances. Some observe a significance in the names of these cities with application to Christ our Refuge. Kedesh signifies holy, and our Refuge is the holy Jesus. Shechem, a shoulder, and the government is upon his shoulder. Hebron, fellowship, and believers are called into the fellowship of Christ Jesus our Lord. Bezer, a fortification, for he is a strong hold to all those that trust in him. Ramoth, high or exalted, for Him hath God exalted with his own right hand. Golan, joy or exultation, for in Him all the saints are justified, and shall glory.
