"Take a census1 of the whole Israelite community by families--all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army2 of Israel."
So on the plains of Moab3 by the Jordan across from Jericho,a4 Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said,
"Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the LORD commanded Moses." These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:55
The descendants of Reuben,6 the firstborn son of Israel, were: through Hanoch,7 the Hanochite clan; through Pallu,8 the Palluite clan;
through Hezron,9 the Hezronite clan; through Carmi,10 the Carmite clan.
These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.
The son of Pallu was Eliab,
and the sons of Eliab11 were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community12 officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah's followers when they rebelled against the LORD.1310
The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them14 along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men.15 And they served as a warning sign.1611
The line of Korah,17 however, did not die out.1812
