Shemot 30:38

38 Whosoever shall make its like, to smell it, shall even be cut off from his people.

Shemot 30:38 Meaning and Commentary

Exodus 30:38

Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereto,
&c.] A man might make a perfume of the same ingredients, and of the same weight, and exactly like it, but not to burn for his own delight and pleasure; but if he made it and sold it to the congregation, as Jarchi observes, he was not guilty; but if it was for his own private use and pleasure, then he

shall even be cut off from his people; (See Gill on Exodus 30:33).

Shemot 30:38 In-Context

36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and place it in front of HaEdut in the Ohel Mo’ed, where I will set a meeting with thee; it shall be unto you kodesh kodashim.
37 And as for the ketoret which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the formulation thereof; it shall be unto thee kodesh for Hashem.
38 Whosoever shall make its like, to smell it, shall even be cut off from his people.
