New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Finally, all of you should be of one mind, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts and humble minds. 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate when people say unkind things about you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God wants you to do, and he will bless you for it. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
For the Scriptures say, "If you want a happy life and good days, keep your tongue from speaking evil, and keep your lips from telling lies. 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.
Turn away from evil and do good. Work hard at living in peace with others. 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil." 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don't be afraid and don't worry. 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."
Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
But you must do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak evil against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong! 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
