Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love of the brethren, a tender heart and a humble mind. 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
Do not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile; 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.
let him turn away from evil and do right; let him seek peace and pursue it. 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil." 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right? 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
But even if you do suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."
but in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence; 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
and keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God's will, than for doing wrong. 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
