King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid , and his heart greatly trembled . 5 When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart.
And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. 6 He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.
Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. 7 Saul then said to his attendants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her." "There is one in Endor," they said.
And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went , and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said , I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up , whom I shall name unto thee. 8 So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. "Consult a spirit for me," he said, "and bring up for me the one I name."
And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done , how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die ? 9 But the woman said to him, "Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?"
And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying , As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. 10 Saul swore to her by the LORD, "As surely as the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this."
Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said , Bring me up Samuel. 11 Then the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" "Bring up Samuel," he said.
And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying , Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"
And the king said unto her, Be not afraid : for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. 13 The king said to her, "Don't be afraid. What do you see?" The woman said, "I see a spirit coming up out of the ground."
And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said , An old man cometh up ; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. 14 "What does he look like?" he asked. "An old man wearing a robe is coming up," she said. Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up ? And Saul answered , I am sore distressed ; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do . 15 Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" "I am in great distress," Saul said. "The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do."
