King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
And when he came , lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching : for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out . 13 When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said , What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily , and told Eli. 14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, "What is the meaning of this uproar?" The man hurried over to Eli,
Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim , that he could not see . 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes were set so that he could not see.
And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said , What is there done, my son? 16 He told Eli, "I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day." Eli asked, "What happened, my son?"
And the messenger answered and said , Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead , and the ark of God is taken . 17 The man who brought the news replied, "Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake , and he died : for he was an old man, and heavy . And he had judged Israel forty years. 18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had led Israel forty years.
And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered : and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken , and that her father in law and her husband were dead , she bowed herself and travailed ; for her pains came upon her. 19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, "Don't despair; you have given birth to a son." But she did not respond or pay any attention.
And she named the child Ichabod, saying , The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken , and because of her father in law and her husband. 21 She named the boy Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel"--because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.
And she said , The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken . 22 She said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured."
