New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
If you explain this to the brothers and sisters, you will be doing your duty as a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is fed by the message of faith and the true teaching you have followed. 6 If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives' tales. Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
This is true, and everyone should accept it. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance
We work hard and suffer much in order that people will believe the truth, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and particularly of those who believe. 10 (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.
Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them. 11 Command and teach these things.
Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you teach, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. 12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.
Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecies spoken to you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.
Keep a close watch on yourself and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right, and God will save you and those who hear you. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
