New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
You can be sure that the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
So when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your benefit and salvation! For when God comforts us, it is so that we, in turn, can be an encouragement to you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.
We are confident that as you share in suffering, you will also share God's comfort. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
I think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and completely overwhelmed, and we thought we would never live through it. 8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.
In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we learned not to rely on ourselves, but on God who can raise the dead. 9 Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
And he did deliver us from mortal danger. And we are confident that he will continue to deliver us. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us,
He will rescue us because you are helping by praying for us. As a result, many will give thanks to God because so many people's prayers for our safety have been answered. 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
