The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Now, regarding the one who started all this - the person in question who caused all this pain - I want you to know that I am not the one injured in this as much as, with a few exceptions, all of you. So I don't want to come down too hard. 5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely.
What the majority of you agreed to as punishment is punishment enough. 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.
Now is the time to forgive this man and help him back on his feet. If all you do is pour on the guilt, you could very well drown him in it. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
My counsel now is to pour on the love. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.
The focus of my letter wasn't on punishing the offender but on getting you to take responsibility for the health of the church. 9 The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.
So if you forgive him, I forgive him. Don't think I'm carrying around a list of personal grudges. The fact is that I'm joining in with your forgiveness, as Christ is with us, guiding us. 10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,
After all, we don't want to unwittingly give Satan an opening for yet more mischief - we're not oblivious to his sly ways! 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
