GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
Jehoahaz's son King Jehoash was in his second year as king of Israel when King Amaziah, son of Joash of Judah, began to rule. 1 In the second year of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign.
Amaziah was 25 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 29 years in Jerusalem. His mother was Jehoaddin from Jerusalem. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Jehoaddin; she was from Jerusalem.
He did what the LORD considered right, but not exactly what his ancestor David had done. He did everything his father Joash had done. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his father Joash.
But the illegal places of worship were still not torn down. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense at these worship sites. 4 The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
As soon as he had a firm control over the kingdom, he executed the officials who had killed his father, the former king. 5 After the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king.
But he didn't execute their children. He obeyed the LORD's command written in the Book of Moses' Teachings: "Parents must never be put to death for the crimes of their children, and children must never be put to death for the crimes of their parents. Each person must be put to death for his own crime." 6 Yet he did not put the sons of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses where the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sins."
